The 3th annual WTLab Workshop

The 3rd annual WTLab Workshop

This workshop, held on November 26th to 30th, contained the following topics as its main educational subjects:
Semantic Web
Linked Data
Natural Language Processing
Web Technology Application
Enthusiastic students registered through this site and participated in the courses.
We hope to hold better workshops in the future to take more efficient steps toward introducing research areas of our laboratory to our audience community.

Using Wordnet To Calculate Semantic Similarities of Words

Abstract

In this workshop, we will introduce Wordnet and its relations then we’ll talk about some of its uses, especially word similarity calculation and works done under this subject. After this, we demonstrate the use of JWS package practically to use this Java-based semantic similarity metric.

Search Engine Optimization

Abstract

Years ago, having a website was enough to have an active presence in the digital world, but today, due to the number of competitors’ websites being big, having a website is not a factor to succeed. To surpass rivals, we need more knowledge. Search engines act as a guide in crowded digital worlds. Then it is better to know these guides’ rules and favorites. Creating a webpage, like a book or newspaper, needs good composition, beautiful and illustrative interface and there are rules to it. A web page, if written standardly, can have a huge influence in attracting viewers’ attention. You can reach this goal by getting familiar with HTML and CSS.

Machine Translation

Abstract

The rising rate of international interactions in different fields and the different number of languages being used in different places in the world have caused difficulties for people trying to communicate. Since we can’t solve this problem by making learning other languages mandatory and also, human translation is not always available, the need for computers for translation is well felt. This kind of translation is referred to as machine translation. First attempts in this field started in 1940 and many achievements are gained to this day. To make a machine translator, two rule-based approach and corpus-based approach are used. In the first approach, some rules are written according to source and destination languages and translation will be done using those rules and one of its main limitations is being bounded by languages. In the second approach, translation is done by considering past examples and translations done by a human. In this approach, there is no need for rules anymore and only a bilingual corpus is needed.

Introduction to Linked Data

Abstract

Linked data is a set of experiences to release data on the web, also to make meaningful links between these data. Since the announcement of linked data quadruple rules by Tim Berner-lee (creator of the web) in 2006, this field has become one of the hottest fields of study in semantic web and due to researcher’s passion for it, it is advancing by the day. One of the most important examples of link data rules in action LOD (linking open data project) which has started since 2007 and supported by W3C consortium. The purpose of this project is to release data according to linked data rules to take the fundamental steps toward the semantic web. In this part of the workshop, we discuss linked data basic concepts, its advantages, and its uses.

Review of an Experience: The FUM-LD Project

Abstract

In this part of the workshop, by presenting a practical experience, the process of releasing linked data sets is discussed. The data set chosen for this purpose is a part of the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad which is available for users on the university website. By releasing this data set in a linked form, the ability to automatically extract and retrieve form it using machine will be possible. After discussing the steps of the process, issues and challenges of this project, along with its practical solutions will be presented.

Semantic Web

Abstract

The semantic web can be described as global space of intelligent machine calculations in which all books, libraries, encyclopedias and knowledge bases are placed together in a meaningful manner and semantic understanding. Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the world wide web, described the future where unlike current web which is only understood by humans, it can also be interpreted and processed by machines. The idea of the semantic web is also from this point. Three definitions for the semantic web are listed below: A project to create a global media to trade information in a way which is understandable and processable by computer. The semantic web is a world scale network which its information can easily be processed by machines. The semantic web includes intelligent web data that can be processed by machines.

Ontology

Abstract

In this presentation, tools to work with ontology will be reviewed. First, we discuss the many features of ontology tools which goes beyond only editing them. Then, we review some of the basic features of these tools. After that, we briefly review two of the tools which are Protégé as an academic tool and Wandora as an application. In the end, a classification of tools according to their use will be presented. This classification will include tools that published as an extension, tools that are related to software engineering, ontology tools, semantic tools, and linked data tools.
